NHHJA Scholarship Details Instructions and Scholarship Criteria
Opportunities
NHHJA continues its commitment to higher education.
Each year NHHJA awards up to 2 scholarships in the amount of $1500 each.
RULES FOR SUBMISSIONS
- The scholarship is open to any curent NHHJA member in good standing who has not previously been awarded a scholarship.
- Participants must be current high school seniors, high school graduates, or current students of higher education, who plan to attend school for higher education in the future. Previous winners are not eligible. Up to two winners will be chosen from eligible submissions.
- Winners will be announced at NHHJA Medal Finals in September as well as via social media and contacted by NHHJA president or treasurer. Once school info is provided, scholarship funds in the amount of $1,500 will be sent directly to school by NHHJA.
- Application due date: August 16, 2026.

Theme: Teamwork and Sportsmanship
What does being part of a team mean to you personally, and how do you define sportsmanship and teamwork? Reflect on the different forms teamwork can take in your life, including but not limited to: your relationships with your horse(s), trainer(s), friends, fellow competitors, family members, and others who support you. How do these connections shape your experience and growth both in and out of the saddle?
In what ways do you contribute as a “teammate” or community member? Additionally, how do you demonstrate good sportsmanship during both successes and challenges/disappointments? Share specific examples that illustrate your approach to collaboration, trust, and respect within your environment.
Essay to be judged on content, essay structure and grammar Essays must receive a passing score to be eligible. Please be sure to not include specific names, barns, or any other identifier that discloses your identity in the body of the response.
Kate Harkness Academic Excellence Scholarship
One $500 Scholarship will be awarded. This scholarship is for an equestrian with a 3.50+ GPA. Applicants must be a high school senior or currently enrolled in college, university, or other institution of higher education. Please provide your most recent transcript with GPA.

Please submit a thoughtful, well-organized,and proofread essay of up to 1,000 words detailing how your experiences workign with and riding horses have positively influenced your academic journey. In your essay, consider ways in which these experiences have altered your motivation, focus, discipline, and/or skills that have contributed to shaping your academic career thus far. Be sure to provide your most recent transcript demonstrating your GPA along with your essay submission.
